In addition to lowering a data center’s environmental impact, Fox Architects’ Green Data Center design also reduces operations and maintenance costs.
For a recent Green Data Center project, Fox Architects designed a roof system to house the facility’s 40 condensers. This unique design placed the condensers directly above the areas they serve. This design reduced by 75% the amount of piping necessary to connect the cooling systems while avoiding any roof penetrations over the server floor.
Facility Manager’s require and appreciate attention to intelligent design details.
Designing data centers that can balance improved maintenance with the potentially conflicting requirements of Facilities and IT teams is a hallmark of Fox Architects’ process. For example, our design that isolated servers to the data center floor while locating power, cooling and other mechanical systems in a separate area allowed maintenance crews easier direct access to service and maintain equipment.
Fox Architects-designed Green Data Centers significantly reduce energy consumption and costs. For example, one of Fox Architects building designs use both air-cooled and water-cooled systems located strategically to take advantage of seasonal advantages to saving energy throughout the year.
Accommodate growth plans and future expansions. Many recently completed data centers have too rapidly reached their capacity; Facility Managers face the difficult challenge of coordinating major construction projects to add space. Their task presents special challenges because the facility—and its sensitive environment—must remain fully operational during construction.
To avoid premature capacity deficits, Fox Architects challenges future growth assumptions during the programming and design of your new facility. Our informed design process will accurately capture future expansions dynamics. In every Green Data Center project Fox designs a systems plus systems model for maintenance flexibility and expansion simplification.

“Fox Architects provided Monsanto Company with a technically superior data center based on our IT and site infrastructure requirements. The building provides several levels of redundancy with complete automation. Fox was committed to working with Monsanto on this LEED-registered facility. There is no doubt that the design will provide a 30% reduction in energy requirements over our present data center.”
